Accurate and consistent measurement of a boat\u2019s speed through the water (STW) is vital for yacht racing. This measurement helps the instrument\u2019s CPU calculate key metrics we rely on, including:<\/p><ul><li><p>We apply it to the apparent wind (AW) to determine the true wind angle and speed (TWA &amp; TWS), which in turn affects the calculation of true wind direction (TWD).<\/p><\/li><li><p>We also use it to calculate the current by comparing the boat\u2019s motion through water (MTW) to GPS motion over ground (MOG).<\/p><\/li><li><p>We use the TWA and TWS to extract target data from the boat\u2019s polar curves. Using incorrect TWA and TWS leads to inaccurate targets. Modern instruments use a percentage correction to the boat speed after the CPU calculates it internally based on a fixed preset Hz\/Kt value, which makes calibration easier.<\/p><p>Calibrating appears simple; it involves finding the right Hz\/Kt or percentage to ensure the instruments accurately convert pulses into boat speed.<\/p><p>We refer to the speed at which you calibrate the sensor, typically around 6 or 7 knots, as your baseline calibration speed.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-310797e4 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"310797e4\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;_ha_eqh_enable&quot;:false}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-103d3a64\" data-id=\"103d3a64\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2aad8c0f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"2aad8c0f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The devil is in the details!<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-62b821bb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"62b821bb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Unfortunately, a single constant number isn&#8217;t enough for good all-around calibration. Several factors influence the simple calibration described above. Some are due to incorrect sensor installation, while natural phenomena cause others.<\/p><h4>Sensor placement<\/h4><p>Poorly positioned sensors generate inconsistent and asymmetrical readings. The proper way to install the through-hull housing for the sensor is:<\/p><ul><li>Install it as close to the centerline as possible; otherwise, readings from each tack will differ.<\/li><li>Keep it clear of the front edge of the keel; otherwise, the water flow in that area may distort the readings.<\/li><li>Install it away from the bow\u2019s waterline because bubbles can cause inconsistent readings.<\/li><\/ul><p>Good installers follow the best practice of placing the sensor two-thirds of the way from the bow to the keel line. A specific case involves V-shaped hulls, which may require a sensor on each side along with additional calibration for each one.<\/p><h4>Sensor alignment<\/h4><p>If the sensor does not align perfectly with the centerline, and because water flows slightly laterally due to the boat\u2019s leeway, the paddle wheel will spin at different rates during opposite tacks.<\/p><p>The person installing the instruments should carefully manage the through-hull alignment, just like sensor placement.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-d924daa elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"d924daa\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;_ha_eqh_enable&quot;:false}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-f61f7cb\" data-id=\"f61f7cb\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f1a68f3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"f1a68f3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Linearity (Heel Correction Table)<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-378ec5e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"378ec5e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The paddle wheel is located in the boundary layer between the hull and the flowing water. This layer contains microturbulence, which slows water near the hull\u2019s surface and immediately affects the paddle wheel\u2019s rotation.<\/p>\n<p>The main issue is that this effect becomes more noticeable the slower you sail and decreases as you go faster. If you\u2019re sailing slower, for example, if the displays show a speed through water of 3 knots, your actual STW will be about 15% higher. Conversely, if you\u2019re sailing faster, with displays showing 10 knots, your actual STW will be around 10% lower. In other words, sensor calibration is not linear<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-5501e6b elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"5501e6b\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;_ha_eqh_enable&quot;:false}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-b7c465a\" data-id=\"b7c465a\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f8e7da3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f8e7da3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The solution is to include an extra adjustment to the already calibrated STW when sailing at different speeds.<\/p><p>If you use instruments with a B&amp;G processor, you&#8217;ll find a table for STW adjustments, including for heel angle corrections. For the legacy H3000 system, it&#8217;s called the \u201cSpeed Linearity Correction Table.\u201d On newer H5000 and Hercules processors, it&#8217;s the \u201cHeel Correction Table.\u201d<\/p><p>When used as a standalone processor, EVOLUTION also provides an STW linearity correction table.<\/p><p>Finding the values to enter into these tables takes considerable effort. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/evolution-tactic.com\/assets\/tools\/HCT.xlsx\">This Excel sheet<\/a><\/strong> provides approximate values for\u00a00\u00ba, 10\u00ba, and 20\u00ba heel angles\u00a0based on your baseline calibration speed.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-aee0e44 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"aee0e44\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;_ha_eqh_enable&quot;:false}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-d2b8833\" data-id=\"d2b8833\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6856222 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"6856222\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Biological growth on the hull and sensor<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fba0130 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"fba0130\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Those tiny marine critters really love boats!<\/p><p>After you clean your boat for a race, algae and crustacean larvae will quickly attach to the hull and begin to grow. Within just a few days, even though they\u2019re still small, they\u2019ll be large enough to affect the turbulence on the water-hull boundary and skew your calibration value.<\/p><p>This answers the eternal question: When should I calibrate my speed sensor? As often as possible! Ideally, calibrate before a race, a training session, or a trial. Between races, don\u2019t let a week go by without calibrating.<\/p><p>When not in use, you can remove the sensor to prevent fouling.
